A friend of mine mentioned that she loved the Caramel Steamers from a local favorite bakery of ours. With the colder weather lately I thought this would be something fun to try and re-create. I am new to steamers, but I have been a long time fan of hot chocolate. I decided to play around with our homemade hot chocolate recipe and switch it up a little to make these Spiced Pumpkin Steamers. They were the perfect solution on a cold day. The kids LOVED these steamers (that sounds too starbuck-ish..how about warmed milk 😉 as their after school treat and thought the pumpkin spiced marshmallows (Kraft makes them..they are adorable!) were the perfect touch. Funny enough, when the mixture cooled down, I even loved this drink cold. I could totally have this in my fridge year round and drink it when I need a little pick me up 😉
(The other great benefit is I have heard the Starbucks Steamers are jam-packed with fat and calories. Because this drink is made with powdered milk you have all of the nutrients of milk but very little fat. The canned pumpkin also adds beta carotene, potassium, zinc and fiber. Bonus!!)
- 1/2-3/4 cup brown sugar (depends how sweet you like it..I of course used more like 3/4 c.)
- 2 cup dry powdered milk (I used non-instant but I am sure any would do)
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbs. cornstarch (heaping tablespoon)
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 2 Tbs. butter
- 5-6 cup water (depending how strong or thick you want it)
- 2 cup pureed canned pumpkin
- In a large pot, combine the first six dry ingredients together (without heat) until the mixture is incorporated evenly. Then, add the rest of the ingredients and simmer on medium-low heat until mixture begins to come together.
- Continue simmering on the stove until ready to serve. If you want a frothy drink, use your hand blender and blend the drink until bubbles and foam form on the top of the pan. Serve with pumpkin marshmallows or plain with a little sprinkling of cinnamon on the top. Enjoy!
- *If you don't have powdered milk you could use 5-6 c. of milk instead of the water/powdered milk combination. The higher percentage of fat your milk is, the creamier your drink will be.
