This time of year is so wonderful to think about all of our many blessings. My children and I love the tradition of writing down one thing each day that we are thankful for during the month of November. It is so fun to watch through the years how the children’s grattitude has evolved from their toys to things like freedom, close friends, and religion. My family and I watched the movie The Hiding Place (base on the true story of the TenBoom family who lived during World War II) the other night and it has opened our eyes to blessings I hadn’t even contemplated before. In addition to many other blessings, this show (and book) helps me realize what a blessing it is to have such delicious food on a regular basis, or really food at all. We are so spoiled to have grocery stores so close and the means to purchase food for our children. So much to be thankful for!!
I have a dear friend who is a single mother of 8 kids. She is a brave and amazing woman and we were talking about the upcoming holiday. She was worried about how she would feed her family the Thanksgiving feast she hoped, on a limited budget. I told her…”Don’t you fear…Deals to Meals is here!” We printed off our meal planner for the week along with the grocery list and headed to the store on a mission to get her Thanksgiving dinner under $100. We did that and more! Not only did we get ALL of the Thanksgiving must-haves (mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, yams, green bean casserole, rolls, frozen vegetables, green salad, jello salad, cheese ball and crackers, and gravy–We were also able to get her a half of a ham, sausage, cheese, several pounds of brown/powdered sugar for her food storage, granulated sugar for her food storage, olives, canola oil, olives, pickles, pineapple, mandarin oranges, 4 lbs. of butter, 4 lbs. of cream cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables (bananas, apples, celery, onions, carrots, etc.), chocolate chips, and much more. We got all of this for under $85!! She was thrilled and she is excited about the extra good bargains she will be able to add to her food storage. With 8 kids I am sure the food doesn’t last long in her house!
The best part at Walmart was when several managers came over to check out how much money we saved. They said we saved over $50…now that is hard to do when your total only comes to $85. Worth the $1.13 a week? I think so 🙂
