If I had to give people one tip on how to use up their food storage, it would be to learn to incorporate whole grains into your everyday cooking and baking. The easiest way I have found to do this is to substitute half of any flour portion of a recipe with a whole grain flour. Instead of using all white flour in a recipe, swap out half of the flour with a whole grain flour and your family will never know! I have even used this method in cinnamon rolls and no one was the wiser 😉 Half whole grain flour (wheat, rye, oat, kamut, etc.) will add so much more nutrients than using all bleached white flour. It will also help you rotate through your food storage faster and help you use up what foods you are storing.
If you are knew to having ground whole grains in your storage, the easiest method to store them (I have found) is in 5 gallon buckets in your pantry. If you do not have these grains in an accessible place, they will most likely never be used. I keep flour, wheat, oats, beans, sugar and rice all in 5 gallon buckets on the bottom of my pantry (my pantry is the size of a very small closet..if they fit in mine, they should fit in yours ;). I have one bucket with wheat kernels in them and one with the ground wheat flour in it. This way, I grind up a huge amount of wheat flour and store in the bucket until it runs low. Once it runs low, I just throw some of the wheat kernels in my grinder, fill back up my bucket and away we go. Keeping both items on hand for easy use, really helps me incorporate these grains into my daily cooking.
