It has been years since I’ve bought store bought hot chocolate. There really just isn’t a substitute for homemade hot chocolate. It’s so much more rich and satisfying than the powder stuff. Don’t get me wrong, the packets are super convenient, but this hot chocolate can be easily made and store in your fridge for a week or more. Not to mention it’s made from items you already have in your food storage and/or fridge and can be made for much less than you can buy the powders for 😉
- 2/3 cup cocoa powder
- Dash salt
- 1 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- 3 cans evaporated milk (or whole milk)
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- Dash cinnamon (optional)
- In a sauce pan, add all of the ingredients and whisk together on medium heat. Continue to whisk until the sugar is dissolved and it's smooth and ready to drink. Serve warm with toppings if your choice.
A few years ago I blogged about another hot chocolate recipe that uses powdered milk if you prefer. This ones great to use up your dry milk in your storage if you have that. No matter which recipe you choose, the are both our families favorites and hope you love them too!
